QUESTIONS 22 AND 23 OF HEIDELBERG CATECHISM

Devotion: The Heart of Our Faith

Scripture Reading: Romans 1:17 – “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’”

Heidelberg Catechism Questions 22 and 23:

  • Q22: What, then, must a Christian believe?
    • A: All that is promised us in the gospel, a summary of which is taught us in the articles of our universal and undisputed Christian faith.
  • Q23: What are these articles?

Reflection:

The Heidelberg Catechism reminds us that our faith is built on the promises of the gospel. These promises are summarized in the Apostles’ Creed, which outlines the core beliefs of Christianity. Understanding and believing these truths is essential for every Christian.

  • God the Father: He is the Creator of everything. He made you and loves you deeply.
  • Jesus Christ: He is God’s Son who came to save us. He lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose again, conquering death.
  • The Holy Spirit: He lives in us, guiding and empowering us to live for God.

Believing in these truths shapes our identity and gives us hope. It assures us that we are part of God’s family and that we have a future with Him.

Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for the gospel and the truths it reveals. Help us to understand and believe in Your promises. Strengthen our faith and guide us to live in a way that reflects Your love and grace. Amen.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How does knowing the core beliefs of Christianity help you in your daily life?
  2. Which part of the Apostles’ Creed stands out to you the most, and why?
  3. How can you share these core beliefs with your friends in a way that is meaningful to them?

I hope this devotion helps you reflect on the foundational truths of our faith.
