### Teen Devotional: Understanding Jesus’ Ascension
#### Scripture: Acts 1:9-11 (NIV)
“After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. ‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.'”
#### Heidelberg Catechism, Question 49
*Question*: How does Christ’s ascension to heaven benefit us?
*Answer*: First, he pleads our cause in heaven in the presence of his Father. Second, we have our own flesh in heaven—a guarantee that Christ our head will take us, his members, to himself in heaven. Third, he sends his Spirit to us on earth as a further guarantee. By the Spirit’s power we make the goal of our lives, not earthly things, but the things above where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.
#### Devotional
When Jesus ascended into heaven, it wasn’t just an awe-inspiring event for His disciples; it had deep, transformative implications for all believers. The Heidelberg Catechism breaks down this monumental moment into three profound benefits.
**1. Jesus Pleads Our Cause**
Imagine having an advocate who never rests, always speaking on your behalf. Jesus, now seated at the right hand of God, continuously intercedes for us. Every time we stumble, every mistake we make, Jesus is there, reminding God of the sacrifice He made on our behalf. This isn’t just a one-time deal; it’s ongoing. So, when you mess up or feel overwhelmed by guilt, remember that Jesus is pleading for you, ensuring that God’s grace covers all.
**2. Our Flesh in Heaven**
Jesus ascended not just as a spirit but in His resurrected body. This is a massive deal because it means that our humanity, with all its flaws and struggles, is represented in heaven. It’s like having a piece of us already there, a guarantee that we too will one day join Him. In your daily struggles, this promise can bring immense comfort. No matter what life throws at you, your future is secure with Jesus.
**3. The Gift of the Holy Spirit**
Jesus didn’t leave us alone. He sent the Holy Spirit to live within us, guiding, comforting, and empowering us. The Spirit helps us shift our focus from earthly things to the things above. It’s like having a constant reminder of our ultimate goal—being with Christ. When you feel lost or unsure about your purpose, the Holy Spirit is there to steer you back to what truly matters.
### Reflection
– Think about a time when you felt guilty or ashamed. How does knowing that Jesus is pleading your cause in heaven change your perspective?
– What are some earthly things that often distract you from focusing on Christ? How can you shift your attention to the things above?
– Reflect on how the Holy Spirit has guided you in difficult times. How can you become more aware of the Spirit’s presence in your daily life?
### Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for ascending into heaven and continuously interceding for us. Help us to remember that we have a secure place with you in heaven. Holy Spirit, guide us and keep our hearts focused on things above. May our lives reflect your love and grace.
Amen.
