ACCEPTED BY FAITH, NOT BY WORKS

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

The Big Idea:
The Heidelberg Catechism, in Question & Answer 61, reminds us of the amazing truth that we are made right with God—not by our own efforts but through faith in Jesus Christ.
Here’s what Q&A 61 says:
Q: Why do you say that through faith alone you are righteous?
A: Not because I please God by the worthiness of my faith; it is because only Christ’s satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me righteous before God, and because I can accept this righteousness and make it mine in no other way than through faith.

Devotional Thought:
Imagine this: You’re given a free ticket to an incredible concert, but you didn’t earn it. You didn’t work for it. Someone just handed it to you. How would you feel? Now take that feeling and multiply it by infinity—that’s what God has done for us in Jesus.
Q&A 61 shows us that our righteousness comes entirely from Jesus. It’s not about us trying to earn God’s love or approval through good works or even by having a “perfect” faith. Jesus already lived the perfect life and took the punishment for our sins. All we have to do is trust Him. Faith is the key to unlocking the joy and peace of knowing we’re fully accepted by God.

Reflection Questions:
1. Do you ever feel like you need to do more to make God happy? How does Q&A 61 change your perspective?
2. What does it mean to you that Jesus’ perfection, not your own, is what makes you right with God?

Prayer Starter:
“Father in Heaven, thank You for giving me the gift of faith and making me righteous through Jesus. Help me to trust in You fully and rest in the incredible grace You’ve given me. Teach me to live out my faith with joy and gratitude. Amen.”

Challenge for the Week:
Think of one way you could rest in God’s grace this week. Maybe it’s letting go of the pressure to be “perfect” or taking time to thank Him for all He’s done. Share what you’ve learned with a friend who might need encouragement.
