Teen Devotional: Living with Hope in the Final Judgment

Scripture Reference:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” — 2 Corinthians 5:10

Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 52:
Q. How does Christ’s return to judge the living and the dead comfort you?
A. In all my distress and persecution, I turn my eyes to the heavens and confidently await as judge the very one who has already stood trial in my place before God and so has removed the whole curse from me. All His enemies and mine He will condemn to everlasting punishment, but me and all His chosen ones He will take along with Him into the joy and the glory of heaven.

Devotional Thought:

It’s easy to feel uneasy when we think about Jesus as the Judge. The idea of standing before Him, knowing He sees everything we’ve done, can seem intimidating. But here’s the amazing truth: Jesus is not just the Judge—He’s also the One who paid the penalty for our sins!

Because Jesus died and rose again, the judgment day isn’t something to fear. Instead, it’s a day of hope for those who trust in Him. His return means the end of pain, sin, and injustice. It means being welcomed into eternal joy with Him forever.

Imagine this: You’re in a courtroom, and your entire life is on trial. Every mistake, every wrong word, and every bad thought is exposed. But then, the Judge comes down from His seat and says, “I’ve already paid the price for all of this.” That’s what Jesus has done for you!

Knowing this changes how we live today. We don’t have to be crushed by guilt or overwhelmed by fear. Instead, we live with confidence, knowing that Jesus has our future secured.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Does the thought of Jesus as Judge bring you fear or comfort? Why?
  2. How does knowing that Jesus has taken the punishment for your sins change how you live?
  3. What are ways you can remind yourself of the hope we have in Jesus’ return?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for being both my Judge and my Savior. When I feel anxious about the future or ashamed of my past, remind me of Your love and sacrifice for me. Help me to live in hope, knowing that You will return to make everything right. Let me trust You more each day and share Your peace with others. Amen.

Challenge:

This week, think about one area of your life where you need to trust Jesus more. Whether it’s fear, guilt, or uncertainty, take a moment each day to pray and ask Him to remind you of His promise to make all things new.
