Devotion for Teenagers: Understanding Our Role in Christ
Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 2:9-10
LORD’S DAY 12
Heidelberg Catechism Questions 31-32:
Q31: Why is He called Christ, that is, Anointed? A31: Because He is ordained of God the Father and anointed with the Holy Spirit to be our chief Prophet and Teacher, who has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption; and our only High Priest, who by the one sacrifice of His body, has redeemed us, and ever lives to make intercession for us with the Father; and our eternal King, who governs us by His Word and Spirit and defends and preserves us in the redemption obtained for us1.
Q32: But why are you called a Christian? A32: Because by faith I am a member of Christ and thus share in His anointing, so that I may as prophet confess His name, as priest present myself a living sacrifice of thankfulness to Him, and as king fight with a free and good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and hereafter reign with Him eternally over all creatures2.
Reflection:
As teenagers, you are at a stage where you are discovering your identity and purpose. The Heidelberg Catechism helps us understand that our identity as Christians is deeply rooted in Christ’s roles as Prophet, Priest, and King.
- Christ as Prophet: Jesus reveals God’s will and plan for our salvation. As teenagers, you are called to seek and share the truth of God’s Word. This means being curious, asking questions, and being open to learning more about your faith.
- Christ as Priest: Jesus sacrificed Himself for our sins and continues to intercede for us. You are invited to live a life of gratitude, offering your talents, time, and actions as a living sacrifice. This could be through helping others, being kind, and standing up for what is right.
- Christ as King: Jesus reigns over all and protects us. You are called to fight against sin and temptation, knowing that you are not alone. With Christ’s strength, you can overcome challenges and grow in your faith.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank You for calling us to be Your followers. Help us to understand and embrace our roles as prophets, priests, and kings in Your kingdom. Give us the courage to seek Your truth, the heart to serve others, and the strength to stand against sin. May we always remember that we are part of Your family and live in a way that honors You. Amen.
Discussion Questions:
- How can you share God’s truth with your friends and family?
- What are some ways you can serve others in your daily life?
- What challenges do you face in standing up for your faith, and how can you overcome them with God’s help?
Remember, being a Christian means you are anointed and set apart for a special purpose. Embrace your identity in Christ and let His love guide you every day.
